Section 40 and Leveson 2 Consultations
November 22, 2016
I have been contacted by several constituents who wish to know more about the implementation of Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act in 2013, and indeed on the possibility of Leveson Part 2.
My position on press regulation has not shifted since the completion of the Leveson Inquiry. I wholly support the independent regulation of the press as I believe the time for self-regulation is over. The press have, unsurprisingly, too heavily centred the debate on the dangers of not having a free press as opposed to the disregard for basic human decency exposed by the Inquiry.
I made representations to the Matt Hancock MP, the relevant Minister for this matter at the Department for Media, Culture and Sport. I have now received the below response which has been redacted to protect the identity of the concerned constituent.
As you will see, the Mr Hancock reiterates the government’s commitment to press freedoms, but also the need for the media to exercise these freedoms responsibly. To that end, the government is holding a consultation on the implementation of Section 40 and Leveson 2 to seek opinion as to whether it is in the public interest. Should it be of interest, I would encourage you to participate in this consultation by following the web link within the Minister’s response.
