Violence against women and girls

June 14, 2016

I was recently in correspondence with a number of constituents regarding a Westminster Hall debate on the subject of violence against women and girls. I felt it was appropriate to pass on the comments I received to the Secretary of State at the Department for International Development and I have attached her response.

Letter from Department for International Development

The Westminster Hall debate took place on 27 April and the full transcript of the debate can be found by following this link: https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2016-04-27/debates/16042752000001/ViolenceAgainstWomenAndGirls(SustainableDevelopmentGoals)

Ms Greening states that gender equality and girls’ and women’s rights are a top priority for the Government. She agrees that action is now needed to implement the target to end all forms of violence against women and girls. The Government recognises the vital role that women’s rights organisations have in securing changes in women’s and girls’ rights. Ms Greening goes on to outline some of the funding instruments used to reach these organisations.

She goes on to state that the UK remains a world leader in setting the international objective to prevent violence against women and girls, to support those who are vulnerable and to support those who have survived such violence. The Government has doubled the number of programmes it supports since 2012 and has invested to create cutting-edge evidence on what works to prevent violence for the global community.

Ms Greening provides the information for the Government’s strategy to combat violence against women and girls, as well as for the report published by the Independent Commission on Aid Impact (ICAI). I have placed the links for the strategy and the report below. The ICAI’s report assessed the Department’s work on tackling violence against women and girls. Ms Greening welcomed the report, in which the ICAI gave the Department their highest rating for the work that is being carried out. I hope this outlines some of the work that the Government is doing on this important matter.
